Shoplifters pack cars with $1,600 in stolen groceries in broad daylight

Connecticut shoplifters were caught on video stealing a reported $1,600 in groceries from an Oxford supermarket Tuesday.

The now-viral footage of the robbery shows four masked suspects packing two vehicles with stolen grocery store products as onlookers watch and record, some shouting remarks at the thieves.

“Look at all that,” one bystander is heard saying in the video . “That’s why prices go up, because of these a–holes … can’t get a job like the rest of us.”

Connecticut State Police said that the suspects made off with $1,600 in goods, primarily detergent and paper towels, Fox 61 reported.

“Information sharing has developed leads that they are most likely going to be trying to sell those items on social media as well as in their communities that they live in,” Resident Trooper Sgt. John Acampora with Connecticut State Police said.

Police believe that at least two of the suspects have committed similar crimes in the region, and it is believed that the two vehicles used to transport the haul were stolen.

“It’s very unusual that anything like that happened here and I guess, while it’s good that it was caught on video so they might be able to get the guys, no one was doing anything about it, they just kind of let it happen,” Vinny Brophy of Beacon Falls said.

Police said that they did not receive a 911 call until 10 minutes after the crime had occurred, allowing the criminals to have fled far from the scene.

“Had the 911 call came in—we can look at anything in retrospect—it could have been handled much differently. We could have at least attempted to intervene,” Acampora said.
